LOUISVILLE, KY – Young musicians from around the region brought their talents to the performance studio of Public Radio Partnership for the Second Annual National City/Classical 90.5 Young Artist Competition on November 10, 2007. The winners of this year’s competition will perform a winners’ recital on the live broadcast of Lunchtime Classics on Wednesday, November 28th at noon. This year’s winners are Benjamin Hoffman of Cincinnati, OH (1st Place) and Michael Zyzak of Mason, OH (2nd Place). Honorable mentions go to Victoria Bates, Choong-Won Jin, Serena Lian, Anne Richardson, Fuhua Song. The event is free and open to the public on a first come basis.
String players, pianists, harpists, singers and chamber ensembles ranging in ages from 10 to 18 brought their considerable range of talent to Louisville’s Fine Arts Station in what is quickly growing to be an important regional event. We had over thirty participants in this year’s competition. This is a forty-percent increase in participation over last year. “You can see from the amazing talent and number of contestants, young people are very excited about classical music,” said judge Daniel Gilliam. “Auditioning is an important step in every musician’s career, and by the looks of it these young people take their talent very seriously.”
Following the performance, winners will receive trophies and prizes. In addition, their performances will be submitted to the nationally-syndicated radio program From The Top, a showcase for the nation’s most talented young musicians. The performances will be available on our website after the live concert at www.wuol.org.
The judges for this year’s competition included Kathy Karr, principal flutist of the Louisville Orchestra and professor at the University of Louisville; Helen Bohannon, violinist and adjunct lecturer at Indiana University Southeast; and Daniel Gilliam, composer and afternoon host on Classical 90.5.
